Flights of Angels Take thee to thy rest Harriet "Connie" Elgynia Melton of Springfield, Mo., passed away on January 8, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband Bertram H. Melton. Harriet is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Stewart and husband, LR, of Springfield, Mo., and Carol Steddum of Eagle River, Alaska; four grandchildren, Ashley Twigg, Donna Hoover and Mike Presley all of Springfield, Mo., Sherry Davis and husband, Tom of Willard, Mo., and James Steddum and wife Katrina of Eagle River, Alaska; five great-grandchildren and soon to be six; 12 great-great grandchildren; three very special nieces, Linda Reeves of Tulsa, Okla.,, Diane Leonard of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Terri Cravens of Plano, Texas; and two very special friends who were always there in times of need with lots of love and care, Pat Wolivar and Laveeda Smith. Connie was born in Weathers, Okla., on June 21, 1916, to Frank and Luda Belle Nelson. She was the middle of 11 children with one brother and two sisters surviving, Auda Nelson and wife, Harriet, of Portland, Ore., Monta Russell and husband, Marvin of Republic, Mo., and Lola Holiday of California. When Connie married Bert, she acquired two wonderful sons, Phillip Melton and wife, Brenda, of Naples, Fla., and Gary Melton of Branson, Mo. Connie opened her own business, The West By Pass Tobacco Store, in Springfield, Mo., in 1947 where she was successful and made many wonderful lifelong friendships. She and Bert retired to Table Rock Lake where there were so many wonderful times and memories shared with family and friends that no one will ever forget. Connie and Bert moved back to Springfield in 1991. She loved gardening, going to church and being with her family and friends, which was her greatest love. She attended South Haven until she was unable to go but loved watching Billy Graham. Connie was an amazing woman, wonderful mother, friend and confidant and will be muchly missed. She was an incredible woman with a beautiful heart and soul-she loved people without reservation or judgment as Christ would. Ever she sought the best, ever she found it. Something we should all aspire to. Join us in a celebration of Connie's life, with a visitation to be held Sunday, January 13, 2008, from 3 to 5 p.m. and funeral service on Monday, January 14, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. all in Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
