2. William T. served with the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a private in Company "A", 120th Illinois Infantry Regiment. He was a prisoner of war held at Andersonville Prison where he was held for ten months and was so starved when released that he could not walk. From Portrait and Biographical Reviews of Johnson, Massac, Pope & Hardin C ounties, Illinois. Chicago Biographical Publications Co. 1893. Transcri bed by Cindy Pegg William T. Modglin was born in Grantsburg Township, Johnson County, 3 Octo ber 1833 to Benton Modglin and Martha Haley. Benton was born in Wilson Co unty, Tennessee where he lived and married. He migrated to Illinois and s ettled in Johnson County where he remained until his death in 1851. Bent on and Martha had seven children: Pleasant H., Nancy ,Martha, Joe, Willia m, Benton and James F. After the death of his parents, William went to li ve with an older brother in Pope County, IL. On 16 April 1853, William was married to Rachael E. Simmons who was bo rn at Cape Girardeau, MO, 8 February 1834 to Lewis Simmons of Wayne Count y, Tenn. Lewis Simmons was the son of Thomas Simmons who was one of the p ioneer settlers of Pope County, IL. Lewis Simmons went to Missouri wh en he was young, married in that state, and came from there to Illinois ab out 1836. He was a pioneer in Johnson County, secured Government la nd in Simpson Township. After leaving there, he settled in Grantsburg Tow nship and lived there until his death. Lewis had four children: Sarah, Ir ving, Hezekiah and Rachel. William and Rachael Modglin had four children. Their daughter, Nancy J. M odglin married W. J. Miller and had seven children; Sarah C., wi fe of A. D. Howell; Fanny B., wife of William B. Bivens; and Ida M. wi fe of Leonard Whitsides. William served in Company A, 120th Illinois Infantry and was a prison er of war held at Andersonville.
