2. Flights of Angels Take thee to thy rest Harriet "Connie" Elgynia Melton of Springfield, Mo., passed away on January 8, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband Bertram H. Melton. Harriet is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Stewart and husband, LR, of Springfield, Mo., and Carol Steddum of Eagle River, Alaska; four grandchildren, Ashley Twigg, Donna Hoover and Mike Presley all of Springfield, Mo., Sherry Davis and husband, Tom of Willard, Mo., and James Steddum and wife Katrina of Eagle River, Alaska; five great-grandchildren and soon to be six; 12 great-great grandchildren; three very special nieces, Linda Reeves of Tulsa, Okla.,, Diane Leonard of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Terri Cravens of Plano, Texas; and two very special friends who were always there in times of need with lots of love and care, Pat Wolivar and Laveeda Smith. Connie was born in Weathers, Okla., on June 21, 1916, to Frank and Luda Belle Nelson. She was the middle of 11 children with one brother and two sisters surviving, Auda Nelson and wife, Harriet, of Portland, Ore., Monta Russell and husband, Marvin of Republic, Mo., and Lola Holiday of California. When Connie married Bert, she acquired two wonderful sons, Phillip Melton and wife, Brenda, of Naples, Fla., and Gary Melton of Branson, Mo. Connie opened her own business, The West By Pass Tobacco Store, in Springfield, Mo., in 1947 where she was successful and made many wonderful lifelong friendships. She and Bert retired to Table Rock Lake where there were so many wonderful times and memories shared with family and friends that no one will ever forget. Connie and Bert moved back to Springfield in 1991. She loved gardening, going to church and being with her family and friends, which was her greatest love. She attended South Haven until she was unable to go but loved watching Billy Graham. Connie was an amazing woman, wonderful mother, friend and confidant and will be muchly missed. She was an incredible woman with a beautiful heart and soul-she loved people without reservation or judgment as Christ would. Ever she sought the best, ever she found it. Something we should all aspire to. Join us in a celebration of Connie's life, with a visitation to be held Sunday, January 13, 2008, from 3 to 5 p.m. and funeral service on Monday, January 14, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. all in Greenlawn Funeral Home South. Interment will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Much gratitude to Springfield Rehabilitation Center for all the love and care that was given to her during her stay and also to Seasons Hospice. 7. Roger Lee Hoover, 44, of Joplin, died 5:35 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2006, after a long illness. He was born March 26, 1961, in Dodge City, Kan., to Jerry and Donna (Sanders) Hoover. Mr. Hoover was a lifelong area resident. He had been a compliance operator for the railroad working for Smith Chambers. He had also worked as a machinist. He is survived by his fiance, Sue Junken, of Joplin; his parents, Jerry and Donna Hoover, of Joplin; three children and their spouses, Sheila and Jeremy Hooper, of Granby, Kelly and Jonathan Nelson, of Joplin, and Roger and Meghan Hoover Jr., of Joplin; one stepdaughter and her spouse, Lisa and Zach Hight, of Mound Valley, Kan.; and six grandchildren, Matthew Hopper, Luckey, Kaylynn and Sally Nelson, Gavyn Hoover and Gavin Hight. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at New Salem Cemetery with Brother Fred Mills officiating. Pallbearers will be Ernie Burdick, Dave Hamilton, Andy McCaslin, Zach Hight, Kevin Bogle and Joe Raines. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. 8. Bruce Edwin Steddum - Joplin Globe Obituary Bruce Edwin Steddum, 70, Webb City, was born in Joplin, June 1, 1930, and passed away Monday, October 30, 2000. Bruce was an Army Infantry Corporal in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Glenna Steddum, both of Joplin. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; three children and their families, Tom and Sherry Davis, Willard, Warrant Officer James Edwin Steddum and wife, Katrina, Copperas Cove, Texas, Donna Hoover, Joplin; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 10. Monta "Skip" Lucille Russell, age 89, of Republic, Mo., passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011. She was born October 17, 1921, in Sardis, Okla., to Frank and Luda Belle Nelson. Monta was the eighth of 11 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank A. Nelson and Luda Belle Nelson; four brothers; and four sisters; a step-son, Gary Dean Russell. She is survived by her husband, Marvin "Rusty" Russell, Republic, Mo.; brother, Frank and his wife Harriet Nelson, Portland, Ore.; sister, Lola Holiday, of Hayfork, Calif.; five nieces, Deborah and L.R. Stewart, Springfield, Mo., Carol Steddum, of Eagle River, Alaska, Linda Reeves, of Tulsa, Okla., Diane Koch, of Columbia Falls, Montana, and Terrie Cravens, of Plano, Texas. A life well lived full of adventure, traveling, enjoying family and friends. Some of her best times were spent motorcycling with the American Legion Riders of the Vietnam Post #639, until health prevented her from doing so. Skip was a wonderful wife, friend, and aunt, with a heart as big as all outdoors. She was loved dearly by all who knew her, and will be missed very much. 11. After retiring this year, Secret Service agent Donald Ray Leonard planned to travel and play more golf with his sons. Leonard, 51, enjoyed sailing, fishing and golf. He also loved his career in law enforcement. During his 20 years with the Secret Service, Leonard was responsible for protecting seven U.S. presidents and various political candidates and dignitaries. He received numerous awards for his service. He was a member of the National Native American Law Enforcement Officers Association and a supporter of the Oklahoma Zoological Society, the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Native American Movement.
